Houston Texans’ unique offseason moves put NFL on notice

The Houston Texans added wide receiver Stefon Diggs to their ranks last week in their latest move of a busy start to the new league year. 

The Texans were one of the stories of the NFL season last year, as they bounced back from a 3-13-1 campaign in 2023 to win the AFC South with a 10-7 record before blowing away the Cleveland Browns in the Wild Card Round.

They would eventually fall to the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round, but their first year under new head coach DeMeco Ryans was an unmitigated success. 

Much of this success was built on the team’s productive 2023 draft class, as number two overall selection C.J. Stroud quickly emerged as one of the best young quarterbacks in the league as he claimed the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, while Will Anderson Jr., selected at number three overall, picked up the defensive award.

While last year’s draft deal-making means the team are without a first-round selection this year, the franchise obviously believes they are in a Super Bowl window, as they have moved aggressively to add further talent this offseason. 

First came the free agency signing of pass rusher Danielle Hunter, while trades for running back Joe Mixon and wide receiver Diggs followed. 

And in landing the high-profile trio, the Texans have done something no other side has ever done in NFL history. According to the NFL Network, no team has added players that have respectively had ten-plus sacks, 1,000-plus rushing yards and 100-plus receptions in the same offseason. 

With Stroud going into the second year of his rookie contract, the Texans are clearly looking to make the most of what is one of the best competitive advantages in the NFL, as they surround their young QB with talent and experience.
