'It is unbelieveable' - Pep Guardiola reacts to Manchester City advancing to seventh straight FA Cup semi-final
Published: Mar 30, 2025
Manchester City overcame an early deficit to defeat AFC Bournemouth 2-1 in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday. The result means the Sky Blues will play in an FA Cup semi-final for the seventh year in a row. It's an incredible show of consistency from a team that has been anything but this season, as City find themselves well outside the Premier League title race and already knocked out of the Champions League. Given the disappointment experienced in other competitions, manager Pep Guardiola was quick to point out the mettle of his players in Sunday's match. "It is unbelievable," Guardiola told BBC Sport. "The way we competed today compared to the way we played in the first game here [in the Premier League]. I was not good enough to overcome that situation then. We were sloppy for many games and I was not able to let them realise what they have done today. For example Brighton was a difficult game [before the international break], we didn't play our best but we fought. This is what had to happen." Guardiola is also not having any talk of the FA Cup being the only chance for the Sky Blues to win siilverware this season. "We won one title already," he said. "We won the Community Shield, we won it. This season has been poor, nothing is going to change. It has not been good, that is not going to change. "Last year we played in a final and could not win it. We have an incredible target to qualify for the Champions League next season and that is what we are going to try to do."
