Chris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn: Five major British fights that did not involve a world title
Published: Apr 14, 2025
Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn will be fighting for family pride and nothing else when they collide on April 26 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, live on DAZN PPV. Often, bouts of this size come with a world title at stake for the victor - but this affair is personal, with the pair competing for something much bigger in their reputations. It isn't the first time an domestic blockbuster has caught fire thoug. Here, DAZN News looks back at some huge British battles with no major crowns on the line too.
James DeGale and George Groves both fought for the same club as amateurs, but they were never friends. Despite Groves defeating ‘Chunky’ in the unpaid code, it was DeGale who went on to the 2008 Olympics where he won a gold medal. Three years later, they met as professionals with the British title on the line and it was Groves who had his hand raised again after a closely fought bout.
Getty Images Rivals for pretty much the entirety of their careers, it would be at the very end when Kell Brook and Amir Khan would meet. Each man had been world champion and appeared in numerous high-profile fights, but despite their lengthy feud, it looked likely they would never meet. That all changed in 2022 when they finally collided, and it was Brook who was victorious as he stopped Khan in the sixth session.
Frank Bruno vs Joe Bugner – 1987
White Hart Lane, the home of Tottenham Hotspur, the club who will host Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn at their new stadium, was the venue when Frank Bruno moved past his domestic rival. Joe Bugner had seen better days, but his profile and reputation from a decade earlier still made him a suitable name to deliver a major show alongside Bruno. Two years before Bruno would face Mike Tyson, he dominated Bugner from the outset before registering a stoppage in the eighth session.James Degale vs George Groves – 2011

David Haye vs Derek Chisora – 2012
It was the Klitschko brothers who were the focus of David Haye and Derek Chisora at the start of 2012, but after the latter lost to Vitali, it soon changed. At the post-fight press conference, Haye and Chisora fought, and it quickly escalated to where a glass was used and threats to shoot were made. With the pair both suspended by the BBBC, they met at West Ham’s Upton Park under a foreign licence, and it was Haye who got the job done in five rounds.Tony Bellew vs Nathan Cleverly 2 – 2014
Three years on from their first battle, a contest that was won by Nathan Cleverly, him and Tony Bellew went at it again. Despite their first meeting being one of the bets fights of 2011, the rematch could not match it despite a volatile build-up. Bellew’s extra effectiveness at cruiserweight where he was not impacted by making weight was a big factor as he moved past the Welshman on points.Amir Khan vs Kell Brook – 2022
