Tyron Woodley names the fight Jon Jones should take next

Alex Pereira should be Jon Jones' next opponent, according to former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

Jones successfully defended the UFC heavyweight title over the weekend, earning a third-round stoppage against Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden. The result came with renewed calls for Jones to next take on interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, but Jones has been cool on the idea, instead favouring a bout against light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira.

Woodley agrees with Jones' desire to face Pereira rather than Aspinall, but he stressed that such a bout should only happen at heavyweight.

"Yes, that's the fight because Pereira, he's big and he's nasty," Woodley told Plejmo. "He’s got knockout power.

"I would like to see him fight a heavyweight because if Pereira wins, he will be champion 185, 205, and heavyweight. And Jon Jones, I think he's the top dog. He shouldn't have to cut weight back down to fight Pereira."

While Saturday's UFC 309 main event was Jones' first action of the year, Pereira has fought three times in 2024 — all successful defences of the UFC light heavyweight title.
